promises of our grandmothers: the series

Promises of Our Grandmothers is a documentary series following Indigenous women climate activists around the world. The women in this series use their voices and physical bodies to stand up for the water and the land, to defend their traditions and create a better future for the generations to come after them. They are strong, fierce, resilient women and they are teaching people how to reconnect with the earth.

Throughout history, Indigenous women have been at the forefront of environmental movements worldwide. While ‘modern’ societies are trying to conquer Nature in the name of progress, Indigenous cultures are working with it. Their technologies and practices are not lost or forgotten, only hidden by the shadow of capitalism and the so-called ‘progress’ of the Western world, whose erasure of Indigenous culture perpetuates degradation, violence, and racism and ignores the vital solutions and wisdom that lie just under our noses.

We will follow the women leaders of these land defender movements in vital locations worldwide. We will listen to their stories and observe their cultural practices and mythologies passed down through teaching, songs, and stories. We will witness their direct action movements against fossil fuel corporations and governments determined to strip the land for all it’s worth, and we will learn from them as each community continues to organize, mobilize, and fight to defend their sacred, beloved land.

We are capable of resistance, of relearning, and of remembering how to live better. We will learn from these women how to remember. And if we choose to stand together, we will be unstoppable.
